The Voyagers feat. Brenda Boykin

Kurhaus Baden-Baden • Runder Saal
Rhythm & Blues

The Rhythm & Blues event series at the Kurhaus Baden-Baden is no longer an insider tip, but has become a permanent institution in the Baden-Baden Events program over the past 20 years. Its artistic director and drummer of the band The Voyagers, Ralf Heinrich, invites soloists to every concert. This makes every evening of the blues series a unique musical experience.

Tonight's guest: Brenda Boykin. Brenda began singing in the choir of the North Oakland Missionary Baptist Church and was the solo singer there. During her high school years she learned to play the clarinet and turned to jazz and blues while studying psychology at Berkeley University. She became known as the lead singer of the Johnny Nocturne Band. She has played at many international festivals, including the Du Maurier Festival in Vancouver, the Monterey Jazz Festival, the San Francisco Blues Festival and the Umbria Jazz Festival. She was the winner of the Montreux Under the Sky competition at the 39th Montreux Jazz Festival: her quartet was named best band of the entire outdoor festival. In 2015, she performed as a soloist with the Russian Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra of St. Petersburg. She is a regular guest at the Tent Music Festival in Freiburg. She worked in America for a long time, but moved from San Francisco to Germany in 2004. Brenda is known to a wider audience through her collaboration with the German nu-jazz project Club des Belugas.
